The Firm

Our work combines research and intelligence analysis, field operations, human intelligence, and independent advisory. We are retained when the documentary record is incomplete, conventional diligence is insufficient, or the circumstances require deeper fact development and a clearer understanding of the people, relationships, interests, and risks involved.

Sam Johnson, M.A.

Founder & Managing Director

With over 15 years of experience in intelligence and risk advisory, Sam Johnson leads corporate intelligence assignments and complex investigations for global corporations, legal teams working across jurisdictions, and family offices. He also advises executives and organizations on protective intelligence, protective planning, and personal risk.

Before founding Sam Johnson Inc. in 2019, Sam spent more than a decade in a confidential intelligence and risk advisory role, conducting intelligence research, overseeing investigations, coordinating field operations, and advising on sensitive matters. That experience shaped the way he now directs the firm’s work, bringing research, investigation, field operations, and advisory judgment together within a single engagement.

Since establishing the firm, Sam has led corporate intelligence assignments involving organizations, counterparties, senior executives, and business relationships in Canada and internationally. His work has included examining the ownership and control of companies, developing background intelligence on executives and principals, tracing assets and commercial interests, and identifying undisclosed relationships, conflicts, and reputational concerns. He has also overseen investigations into suspected fraud, insider activity, internal misconduct, and deliberate disruption affecting corporate and industrial operations.

For legal counsel, Sam has directed investigations in support of complex disputes and litigation spanning multiple jurisdictions. These assignments have involved reconstructing disputed events, locating and interviewing individuals with relevant knowledge, testing competing accounts, tracing assets, examining relationships among the parties, and coordinating surveillance and field operations to gather and verify evidence.

In executive risk matters, Sam has led protective intelligence engagements from the initial assessment of a concern through protective planning and operational response. His work has included investigating potential threat actors, assessing indicators of intent, capability, and access, evaluating the exposure of executives and organizations, and planning for high risk events and terminations. When circumstances have required a physical response, he has directed protective surveillance, protective presence, and executive protection.

Sam sets the direction of the firm’s engagements and remains closely involved in the analysis of the intelligence developed. His work brings together research, human source inquiry, field investigation, and independent assessment to establish what occurred, determine who and what matters, and advise on the implications.

Sam holds a Master of Arts in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies from the University of Toronto and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and English from York University. He is a licensed investigator authorized by Ontario's Ministry of the Solicitor General.

Leo Jacobs

Protective Operations Specialist

Leo Jacobs leads protective operations for Sam Johnson Inc., bringing international experience in executive protection, protective planning, and field operations across Canada and Brazil. He works with corporate executives, high net worth individuals, and private principals in circumstances requiring disciplined planning, close protection, and discreet operational support.

In Brazil, Leo led an integrated security firm specializing in executive protection and electronic security. He directed personnel and deployments while personally carrying out armed protection assignments for corporate executives, high net worth individuals, and other private principals.

His executive protection experience includes assignments for principals whose public profile, business responsibilities, or personal circumstances created an elevated level of exposure. He has planned operations around executive movements, business activities, and periods of heightened concern, assessing locations, access points, routines, and potential vulnerabilities before determining personnel requirements, protective coverage, and operational contingencies.

Leo has also overseen operations in which close protection, protective surveillance, access control, and electronic security had to function as a coordinated system. These assignments have required him to deploy personnel, integrate security technology with physical protection, and adjust coverage as conditions changed while allowing the principal’s activities to continue with minimal disruption.

At Sam Johnson Inc., Leo translates protective intelligence and threat assessment into operational planning. He helps determine how personnel, surveillance, movement planning, and physical protection should be combined in response to the circumstances, and leads protective surveillance, protective presence, and executive protection when required.

His broader background includes conflict management, situational awareness, and protective security training through international programs in Europe, Brazil, and Israel. His education includes an MBA in Private Security Management, advanced studies in Security Sciences and International Security Direction, a Doctor of Philosophy in International Security Sciences, and a Bachelor of Laws from Brazil. He also brings a martial arts background spanning Kyokushin Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and boxing.

Fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, Leo strengthens the firm’s ability to support executives, organizations, and private principals in environments where discretion, judgment, and presence are essential.
